Sister Elizabeth Helped Broker Deal for Victims

Drogheda Independent, Wednesday June 03 2009 by Alison Comyn

THE Presentation sister who helped negotiate the 2002 compensation agreement for abuse victims with the Government is the former principal of a Drogheda school.

Sr Elizabeth Maxwell was head teacher at Our Lady's College, Greenhills from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s, before leaving to take a post in America.

At the time she brokered the deal with the Government over contributions from religious congregations for victims, Sr Maxwell was secretary general to the Conference of Religious in Ireland (CORI).

She is presently the Provincial (Northern Provence) of the Presentation Sisters.

Sr Maxwell will meet with the Taoiseach on Thursday, a day after he consults survivors' groups.

Speaking to newspapers over the weekend she said the deal was not a mistake but added that it may be inadequate in light of what the report revealed recently.

She also said she was keeping her mind 'totally open' on what further contributions may be made in the context, 'then the congregations can decide how much they can contribute'.
